Muenster is instantly recognizable by its bright orange rind, mild salty flavor, and pleasantly chewy texture. Wisconsin Muenster is thought to have originated from German-speaking immigrants from the Alsace region of France, where the cheese dates back centuries, although the Wisconsin variant is much milder and softer than its traditional Alsatian counterpart. This cheese is the classic nibbler often found cubed on tavern tables around the state or on picnic or barbecue cheese plates. It’s also a very popular burger finisher and makes a pleasantly gooey grilled cheese sandwich. A true Wisconsin staple.
