Baumgartner Cheese Store and Tavern is the oldest continuously running cheese store in the State of Wisconsin. Started in 1931 by Emil Baumgartner as a cheese making supply store Baumgartners' has slowly evolved into it's current form. Cheese makers who couldn't pay their bills would give Emil the cheese they had made instead. Being on the Courthouse Square of Monroe, Wisconsin meant that Baumgartners' was in as good a place to sell cheese as it was to sell cheese making equipment. A store selling cheese in Monroe couldn't get away with not having cheese sandwiches so of course they added sandwiches. Wisconsinites aren't going to be happy having a cheese sandwich with-out a tasty malt beverage (beer) to wash it down, so Emil put an honor keg at the end of the counter. When enough of the honor beers went without being paid for Emil ended up hiring a bartender. As the cheese factories in the area got larger Baumgartners was no longer big enough to sell the equipment that they needed, and evolved into the cheese store and tavern it is today. The original menu was as simple as several cheese sandwiches. Over time, chili, soups, and deli sandwiches have been added. The Baumgartner's owned the cheese store for 19 years before selling it to one of their employees; Bob Hahlen. Bob had it for 35 years before selling it to John and Christy Huber, the grandson of the "Huber" from the Huber brewery also in Monroe, WI. John and Christy sold the restaurant to Tyler and Christopher Soukup, two brothers who grew up in and worked at Baumgartners' and have owned it since 2005. We hope you enjoy our cheese and your visit here as much as we have.
