Did you know
is Wisconsin'sWisconsin's oldest cheese store?
Baumgartner's
Selling Wisconsin's Best Cheese Since 1931
Since 1931, Baumgartner's Cheese Store and Tavern has been Wisconsin's oldest cheese store. Our retail shop stocks Wisconsin classics, imported wheels, and specialty foods from local makers. Next door, the tavern serves sandwiches, soups, and pub favorites paired with regional beers on tap. You will find us in downtown Monroe, the heart of Green County's Swiss heritage and dairy country. We are about an hour from Rockford, Janesville, Madison, and Dubuque, Iowa. Plan a weekend around Cheese Days in September (even-numbered years), when Monroe fills with parades, music, and cheese tastings.
What you will find here
Browse aged cheddars, Limburger, and gift boxes in the store, or settle in at the tavern for a cold beer and a cheese sandwich. Staff can help you pick pairings for a picnic, a party platter, or shipping a taste of Wisconsin home. Hours and directions are listed below. See our Cheese Days guide for festival weekend tips, or explore the cheese list and our story on other pages.
